The straight answer on Labadee right now, and where to spend a real beach day on the north coast.
Citadelle Laferrière
The fortress King Henri Christophe built on Pic Laferrière after Haiti’s independence in 1804 is the reason many travelers come to the north. It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site National History Park: Citadel, Sans Souci, Ramiers, inscribed in 1982. Plan it with our Citadelle Laferrière day trip page, and read what to know before you climb the Citadelle.
Sans-Souci Palace
At the foot of the mountain, in Milot, the ruins of the royal palace mark the start of the climb. Most visitors see both on the same day. Our guide: Sans-Souci Palace at Milot.
Labadee and the north coast
Labadee is best known as a cruise stop, and cruise visits are currently suspended. Our page on Labadee and north coast beaches explains what that means for you, and where to spend a beach day instead. For the coves you can visit, see our guide to the best beaches near Cap-Haïtien.

Before you go: travel tips
Check your government’s official travel advice before you book, and check the status of each site before you go: visits to the Citadelle and Sans-Souci were stopped in early September 2026 while emergency works are carried out. The front desk will tell you what we know. Our guide to whether Cap-Haïtien is safe to visit summarizes the current advice, and our guide to the best time to visit covers the weather and the festivals.
