Planning a Wedding in Cap-Haïtien: Venues, Paperwork and a Garden Setting

Evening garden dinner at Hidden Palace in Vaudreuil, with tables set beside a lit waterfall water feature under draped fabric and chandeliers

Short answer: Most couples marrying in Cap-Haïtien do two things. They hold a legal civil ceremony with a local civil registrar, and they hold the celebration at a venue that can host guests, food and music in one place. At Hidden Palace Guest House and Resort, on RN1 in Vaudreuil, our garden event space with its waterfall feature, our restaurant and bar, and our rooms let your family celebrate and sleep in the same place.

A wedding in the north of Haiti means a lot of things at once: family flying in from Miami, Boston, Montreal or Paris, grandparents who have waited years for this day, and a bride and groom who want it to feel like home. We host celebrations at our guesthouse near Cap-Haïtien, and this guide covers the questions couples ask us most.

Can you legally get married in Haiti as a foreigner or member of the diaspora?

Yes. According to the U.S. Embassy in Haiti, Americans who want to marry in Haiti should first visit the Civil Registrar (the Officier d’État Civil) where they plan to marry. The embassy lists what couples usually present:

  • Passports or national ID cards
  • Birth certificates
  • A list of at least two witnesses, each with ID
  • A certified divorce certificate or a death certificate if a previous marriage ended
  • A blood test, which the embassy says is often waived for American citizens but may still be required

The embassy notes that the registrar sets the ceremony date within about 15 days. It can also authenticate the marriage certificate afterward, which may help when you use the document back home. Rules and practice can vary by office, so contact the registrar in the commune where you plan to marry well before your trip. If one of you holds Haitian citizenship, ask the registrar which documents apply to you.

Civil ceremony, religious ceremony, or both?

Many Haitian couples hold the civil ceremony and a church ceremony, then move to a reception. Some families do the legal part at home before traveling and hold the full celebration in Haiti. Either way works. What matters for planning is knowing where your legal marriage happens, so the paperwork and the party stay on schedule.

How do you choose a wedding venue in Cap-Haïtien?

The Cap-Haïtien area has hotel halls, hillside properties, beach venues and private homes. Before you commit to any of them, ask:

  1. Can guests stay on site? When the party ends late, your aunt from New York should not have to cross the city at night. Canada’s travel advice for Haiti tells visitors to avoid traveling after dark, and that matters for a wedding crowd.
  2. Is food handled in-house? One team for dinner, drinks and service saves you from coordinating three vendors.
  3. Is there an indoor or covered backup? The north coast gets rain in several seasons. Ask what happens if it pours.
  4. Who manages transport? Guests arrive on different flights. Airport pickups and rides for older relatives need a plan.
  5. What is the music plan? DJ, live band, or both, and until what time.

What a wedding at Hidden Palace looks like

We are a guesthouse with resort comforts on RN1 in Vaudreuil, in Nord Haiti, just outside the bustle of downtown Cap-Haïtien. Here is what we can offer a wedding party.

A garden setting with a waterfall feature

Our garden event space is built around a waterfall water feature, which makes a beautiful backdrop for a candlelit dinner, first-dance photos or a quiet exchange of vows. As the light fades, the grounds glow and the evening takes over.

Food, drinks and service on site

Our restaurant offers buffet dinner and table service, and our bar and outdoor tiki bar keep drinks moving. For the families staying with us, a free buffet breakfast the next morning makes a gentle start after a long night, and 24-hour room service covers the late-night hunger that always follows a wedding.

Music and dancing

We have a nightclub with a DJ, so the dancing can keep going. For guests who want a quieter corner, the grand lounge with its billiards table and our outdoor hot tub are good places to unwind.

Rooms for the wedding party and family

Staying where you celebrate is the real luxury. The couple, parents and bridal party can get ready on site, and nobody has to drive home. Our front desk is open 24 hours, and our concierge can help coordinate the little things that come up on a wedding weekend.

Transport for guests

Guests flying into Cap-Haïtien International Airport (CAP) can use our free airport shuttle. For the ceremony, trips to church or photos around the city, we offer private car service, a local shuttle and car rental on site. Parking is free.

Help with the kids

Weddings are family events. Our kids’ club and kids’ activities keep younger guests busy, and babysitting lets parents enjoy the reception.

Planning around current conditions

We want your day to be joyful and well planned, so here is the honest picture. The U.S. State Department rates Haiti at Level 4: Do Not Travel, last issued July 10, 2026, and other governments give similar advice. Share that information with your guests so each person can decide for themselves and check their travel insurance. Our guide to whether Cap-Haïtien is safe to visit explains the advisories in plain language.

Some famous photo spots are not available right now. The Citadelle Laferrière has been closed to visitors since April 11, 2026, and on September 6, 2026 Haiti’s Minister of Culture confirmed that visits remain stopped while interim works continue, with no reopening date announced. Plan your photos around the grounds, the city and the coast instead.

A simple wedding-weekend timeline

  • Arrival day: guests land at CAP, the shuttle brings them to Vaudreuil, and everyone has dinner together.
  • Day before: registrar appointment or rehearsal, beauty prep, and a relaxed evening at the tiki bar.
  • Wedding day: ceremony, then photos in the garden, dinner, and dancing with the DJ.
  • Day after: breakfast, a slow morning in the hot tub, and airport runs for guests heading home.

For big families, our guide to planning a family reunion or group trip covers flights, meals and rides for large groups. If many guests live abroad, our diaspora guide to visiting the north is worth sharing with them.
